Default I really dont know whats going on?

I just hope so badly that someone can help me!!!

I got Guild Wars 2 days ago. I installed it, and then it came up with this message when i went to play it:

Unable to initialize 3D output. Please verify that you have installed DirectX 8 and an updated video driver.

The frustrating thing for me is that i'm only 15 and i dont know much about computers!

So that very day i bought Guild Wars i bought a brand spanking new video card: Ati Radeon 9800.
Plus, i downloaded DirectX 9.

Today i got the card in the post and i fitted it into my computer. But to my horror, the message still comes up. I have downloaded the updates off the Ati Radeon website and have re-installed Guild Wars!

What else can i do!! I'm going crazy over this thing, i cannot seem to find a logical explanation on the internet that actually works!!

Please, if you can help me, make it simple for me to do, as i cant really understand all this video card mumbo jumbo...

When you say you installed it, you ran the exe and not just click the download as the download is merely a file or an exe that you need to run to actually install Direct x. To see if you actually have direct x properly installed, click start then on control panel and then on display. Next click on settings. Finally click on the advance button near the bottom of that tab. Look for a tab that shows your video card name, for me my PC at work uses the intel extreme onboard video card but ATI should their own tab. Look for any button that shows and says graphics properties. Most should give you a report type detail which in turn, should display what version of Direct X you are using.

Now did you remove your old card/on board card display drivers? Most ATI will tell you to remove them first. Read the steps on installing the new card to the letter. Finally, you are actually hooking your monitor up to the new card and not the old one or the onboard one port are you (although most PCI/AGP cards override the onboard one so it should work but hey who know).

Did you install the ATI display drivers? Videocards are "plug and play" but the default vga driver Windows has will not take advantage of your card.

firstly ... you MAY need to use the ATI cleaning utility to clean your computer of old drivers etc BEFORE installing the new drivers. Sometimes ATI cards dont automatically read the newest driver ... it is flaw that ATI has developed a tool to help you.

Can I ask you if you can check what version of Direct X it says your running

to determine ...
On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run, In the Run dialog box, type dxdiag, then click OK?

I also have an ATI 9800 on WinXP and have no problems.

Try what Night suggested first. And DirectX 9c is the latest version.

Then you can try playing the ATI control panel and the settings. I can't tell you exact details right now (coz i'm at work) but there are settings for 3D and OpenGL. Each has an option to let the application decide what to do.

From the looks of your DirectX export, it seems that you had an Nvdia card earlier. I assume you removed it and put your ATI card. Have you uninstalled the nvdia drivers? Sometimes this might create conflicts if you have old drivers from an older card.

Another thing which shows up on your log of dxinfo is that you have old version of directx installed. Install latest version. There's a version on GW-install cds, which should be sufficient..

And you are using drivers from 2003 on your videocard. Update them too. www.ati.com

Hmmm....you're still using window me

Another thing i can think of is to run Windows Update from Internet Explorer.

And are you sure you uninstalled your NVDIA drivers?

that version 4.09 yadadayada IS indeed directX 9

but as posted two above me it does appear that you have nVidia drivers which could be interrupting your display adapter.

I had a similar issue with my bosses computer a work. I had to remove all the drivers ... then use the ATI tool to be sure there was nothing earlier to conflict with the new drivers. Finally install the new drivers. The I set the display adapters and tested it. Worked fine. I will see what I can dig up ... don't pull all your hair out yet.

My appologies heres your issue .... I just finished reading the report --------

************************************

your card is being read here - afterit can't find the primary nVidia card it looks here and assigns the DirectX values accordingly. You have to remove all of your driver information ... for both ATI and nVidia (especially nVidia) ... then be sure that your computer is actually looking at the right card ... default install don't always work.

EDIT ... although your card shows as your display device and you have the proper version of directX it was installed improperly ... because your machine cant communicate between the two. You can remove any nVidia drivers with Driver Cleaner http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/ or Detonator RIp or Detenator Destroyer ....

then to clean your ATI files from your pc ... including catalyst ... using ati's tool https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27 ...

then AND only then install your new drivers ... the problem is because your running ME ... having numerous drivers DOES cause issues ... this was solved with XP as you can have any drivers available at a whim, display or printer.

until your get this to work your directplay will not be able to function. This isn't good, because DirectPlay is welll .. what many games use.

Take your time ... gl!

Go into your Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs and see if you have any references to Nvidia Drivers located in there?

If so, it could well mean that you didn't uninstall your graphics drivers correctly, and being Windows ME, it's a pig of an OS. Sorry, but it's true. Windows 98se is so much better than ME, but XP is better than both.
And if there are serious driver problems, it's a pain to fix. Normally resulting in a full reinstall of the OS.

Anyway, double check your add/remove. If the NVidia is still located in there, uninstall your ATI drivers and then remove your ATI card after shutting the PC down.

Replace you NVidia card and see if it picks up all your NVidia details and automatically installs your NVidia card on reboot. If it does, then run the remove option in the Add/Remove and remove all references to NVIdia drivers.

Then shut the machine down, take out the card and replace with the ATI card. Reboot the machine

Then run the Driver Cleaner program to remove all references to NVidia and ATI drivers from your machine. Driver Cleaner can be obtained from www.guru3d.com.

After you have run this, reboot your machine.

After the reboot, rerun your install CD for you ATI card and reboot after the install and see if this helps resolve your problem.

If it does not, and you are still having problems, then try a reinstall of the Direct X software. If this doesn't work, locate the Direct X removal tool from the same website as above, and completely remove Direct X.
Reboot your machine and then do a clean install of Directx from the Microsft Updates website.
Don't use any updates located on your game CD's as these can sometimes be faulty.

Hope these options help resolve your problem. If they don't then you may need to get a techie friend, who knows a bit about the registry and can help you remove all references to the ATI and NVidia drivers, so you can try and start again.

Otherwise, a full reinstall of ME may be required.

ok, might be a fadt question, but have you looked at the Mainboards info?
does it say 4X AGP or 8X AGP?
(appologies if i missed it but my eyes ache and i had to skip the numbers)

is your Nvidia a 4X AGP? (its probably faster to look at the card than the board, unless you keep all yer bought items bits ^^)

if you board is 4x, but yer card is 8X it might be that.... we have had cards at work that messed up their PCs cause they were not compatable....
